Social Justice
Historically marginalized and disadvantaged populations face a higher burden of illness, injury, disability, and mortality, and their access to and use of care is limited. Nursing, and specifically Penn Nursing, has long focused on social justice and improving the outcomes for the most vulnerable.
An ongoing mission
“Nurses, through their research, practice, education, and advocacy are an important component in leading the elimination of health disparities and in achieving health equity. ” says Dr. Villarruel. “Our commitment to social justice and our work challenges dominant truths and disrupts structural inequities in health care to enhance health and quality of life for all.”

Azucena Villalobos
Leonard A. Lauder Community Care Nurse Practitioner Fellow
“I chose Penn Nursing due to the value this institution places on community engagement and social justice. It has challenged me to think critically and outside the box, and I’ve had the pleasure of learning not only from my instructors, but also from my cohort—everyone brings a multitude of experiences, ideas, and backgrounds.”

Women who use drugs face systemic challenges to accessing high-quality healthcare, including stigma from providers, gender-based violence, setting-based safety concerns, childcare responsibilities and legal fears about child custody, lack of gender-focused services, and inflexibility of healthcare settings. Dr. Starbird’s work is rooted in the belief that the best way to minimize these barriers is for the healthcare system to improve the way it delivers care, rather than putting the burden on the individual patient to change her behavior.</p></div></div>

Who was Minnie Hogan Clemens?
In 1888, Minnie Hogan Clemens (Dorchester) became the first Black student to attend the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s Nurse Training School (HUP). In the local news coverage at the time, Clemens’ acceptance into the program was widely celebrated by the Black community as a sign of progress for Black women, who had “no opportunities for employment in factories, stores or at trades, teaching or menial service alone being open to them.”
