About Penn Nursing
Innovative programs
Penn Nursing has the number one undergraduate nursing program in the country and multiple number one and top-rated master’s programs here in the U.S. Our curriculum merges the scientific basis for healthcare with clinical experience, offering a side-by-side incorporation of theoretical and applied knowledge, a rarity in nursing education.
Whether you enter directly from high school, are new to nursing as a career changer, come to us ready to specialize your nursing practice, or are beginning the research-intensive journey toward a PhD, you’ll find an academic program with the flexibility to meet your educational goals.
Renowned faculty
Our faculty include some of the world’s most expert clinicians, teachers, and researchers. Scholarship produced here is nationally and internationally recognized and is consistently published in a wide range of high-impact, interdisciplinary journals.
Advancing healthcare at home and around the world
From the neighborhoods in West Philadelphia to communities around the world, our work outside Fagin Hall is as much about pushing our own knowledge and expertise forward as it is about improving the health of those with whom we interact.
As nurse researchers and clinicians, we see the challenges people face and have the opportunity to find ways to address those challenges, eventually bringing solutions back to our communities in a very tangible way.
The next generation of leaders
We prepare students to anticipate trends in nursing by offering a number of experiences not found at most other schools such as a state-of-the-art simulation center, student research opportunities across all levels of scholarship, classrooms with the latest technology, and rigorous clinical experiences with a prestigious health system and community partners.
We foster deep engagements in practice, research, and health around the world, making a Penn nurse one like no other.

Our People
From our faculty and staff to our students and alumni, excellence and innovation are the through-line that drive the Penn Nursing spirit of doing more. Health equity and social justice are the goal—and Penn Nursing people are the force that fuel the possibilities.
My research focuses on the transformative role information technology can play in the health care of older adults and their families, and the generation of innovative personal health solutions in home and hospice care.
At Penn, there is a culture of caring and a genuine commitment to ensuring high quality nursing education. With my mantra to ‘pay it forward,’ I am proud to grow and develop the next generation of nurses as strong nurse leaders and advocates for building a culture of health.

Welcome Back Spring 2024: A Message from Dean Villarruel
Welcome to Spring semester! I hope you had a restful winter break and peaceful holiday celebrations. The Fall Semester brought unprecedented fear, pain, and change, and the break couldn’t have come soon enough! I love the new year—it brings opportunities for new beginnings, and I believe that we—as a University—will emerge even better and stronger! It will take all of us working together to make that happen. I hope you’re ready to start anew, recharged and refreshed.
