Ms. Jacobsen was a long-standing professor of statistics who taught many generations of nursing students how to employ statistics in research. During her 28 years with Penn Nursing, she was one of the School’s most popular teachers and was known especially for her humor, quick wit, and energy. In recognition of these talents, she received the prestigious Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching from the University in 1975. Ms. Jacobsen’s expertise in statistics proved critical to the development of the nascent Center for Nursing Research. Personally serving as primary statistician for much of the early research in the School, her scholarship and application of mathematical disciplines created the foundation upon which Penn Nursing’s research, now nationally and internationally renowned, is based.
